Why Do Companies Rely on Their Mission and Vision Statement?
Every good company has a Mission Statement and a Vision. They are intended to be the guiding principles to fall back on: an optimal standard for all that is part of the organization to aspire to. A healthy business plan, prudent management, customer service, quality products, great staff, strong leadership, and adaptability are all ingredients in the recipe for a successful company. Solid controls and processes typically fill in the blanks so that organizations will succeed even when there are personal changes; with planning and foresight, an appropriate succession plan can be thrown in the mix for when the founders want to retire.
I’m used to that world: it comforts me when those types of controls and structures are used to meet Albertans’ needs. When we use the wisdom of the provincial motto that our founding fathers created many years ago, it’s a touchstone that can be said with pride when things are going well. In times of real challenges, we can use it to ground ourselves as a reminder of what needs to be done. Strong and Free. Freedom and Strength. When we have that, almost everything else will fall into place.
New Pillars for Alberta
With the recent leadership changes, restructuring of the organization, prioritizing our pillars, and utilizing our full bench strength, that theme of Strong and Free will be very relevant in everything that we execute as a team in representing this great province. Four committee groups have been formed that include full participation from all the elected representatives, MLAs and Ministers alike, that will concentrate on 6 basic pillars, supporting that Strong and Free vision for our province.
These include Economy and Affordability, Alberta First, Social Services, Building Communities, Legislative Review, and Treasury Board cabinet committees.
The pervasive theme to address Albertans’ needs will be focused on the Economy and Affordability, Alberta First, and Building Communities committees.
I am happy to say that the several caucus and committee meetings we’ve had have been extremely productive; we are firing on all cylinders again… We are all feeling empowered again to make a difference in our province and to ensure that we remain Strong and Free!
Economy and Affordability
Targeting the current inflation and affordability challenge is of the highest importance, as they will be dealing with ‘Justinflation’, logistic challenges, cost of energy, and cost of services. The team has all been rolling up their shirtsleeves and diving into this right away, and now that the full team is being used, the results are not only going to be timely, but practical. Short-term relief is imminent while correcting the mid-term and long-range elements to fix the issues, not just promoting pitches with neat catchphrases.
Alberta First
This one should be self-explanatory. The goal is to ensure that everything we do looks at what is in the best interest of Alberta, not just now but for future generations as well. Federal overreach has been creeping in more and more in recent years, and this government firmly believes that those strings need to be clipped. Most would rather keep our wealth here than have it recycled and given back to us at a lesser value, with hidden controls being implied. Albertans would rather work hard and pay their own way than give away their freedoms to depend on a federal government scheme. We will work hard to ensure that we collaborate with the other provinces that feel the same way and recognize their position in the country and ours. Prairie provinces need to work more closely to ensure strong relationships and economic ties. We need to ensure that our territorial neighbors to the north are not left out and that we only strengthen our ties for mutual growth and development for generations to come.
Building Communities
Keeping what we have, building on it, and ensuring we have a sustainable future inclusive of both urban and rural objectives. Giving Albertans and Canadians a chance to be part of the Alberta Advantage. Economic corridors fit squarely within this area, and I am very happy to be part of this committee. I strongly believe that when we tie communities together, everyone wins. When we work alone in silos, we will inevitably fail. Healthcare reforms also ensure we have the services we need when we need them, directly contributing to the longevity of any community.
I am happy to say that the several caucus and committee meetings we’ve had have been extremely productive; we are firing on all cylinders again. It turns out that a leadership change is just what the doctor ordered. It’s great to see the team pulling together again, and I’m happy to be part of an energized and enthusiastic group with the absolute best interest of Albertans at heart. We are all feeling empowered again to make a difference in our province and to ensure that we remain Strong and Free.
Sincerely,
Shane Getson
