Emergencies Act
Well, 2022 was anything but boring. We garnered worldwide attention back in February for a convoy of trucks that put the spotlight on Canada concerning the Federal protocols surrounding COVID-19. That “fringe minority with unacceptable views” was a heck of a lot larger than the PM wanted to recognize. In fact, it broke down barriers and moved us toward ending restrictions while simultaneously opening dialogue toward implementing practical, common-sense solutions. I was happy to see Canadians coming together and inspiring many other countries to stand up. Then the Emergencies Act was invoked, again, showing how far things had eroded from what used to be considered ‘normal’ government operations. An inquiry is well underway to resolve that now.
Leadership Review
We had a leadership review, followed by a leadership race for the position of Premier. There was a resurgence of the grassroots voice and further concerns that the ‘nice and easy’ approach with the federal government had run its course.
Bill C-21 Firearms Ban
We have a more assertive position now, and our ministers are indeed using their powers under the constitution when it comes to our provincial authority to push back when the federal government overreaches. This could not be clearer than on the Firearms file regarding Bill C-21 and the most recent amendment that basically bans anything bigger than a .22 calibre rifle. They no longer need to be black and scary looking to those who make the rules, they just need to have a magazine, fixed or removable.
Bill-1 Alberta Sovereignty Act
In Alberta, the “pandemic” is all but over, and we absolutely have the most freedom-loving province in the country, with the policies and the leadership to back it up. With Bill 1, which just reached royal assent last week, our government has clearly defined a process to be used for times when Federal Government overreach must be promptly addressed. It also ensures that business can carry on, as usual, adding predictability to investment climates so that federal-driven ideological agendas will no longer be the wind that ripples the water. There is a very strong reason we are leading the entire country in economic growth and investment; people from other provinces are looking at Alberta as the place to make their lives here in Canada.

Reflecting on 2022
I am so happy that this year, we don’t have any restrictions to deal with over the holidays; people can get together with friends and family and truly celebrate Christmas, Hanukkah, and New Year’s. I hope everyone can take the time to reflect on what we went through and look forward to getting life back to normal. I hope we all recognize the lessons learned, and I want the new year to shine with hope and optimism. I know there will be challenges in 2023, but with the leadership changes we have had and the team pulling together, we will live up to our province’s motto and make sure Alberta truly is Strong and Free.
Sincerely,
Shane Getson
