Sharing 2020 Early Fall Investment Updates
I hope everyone has had a chance to enjoy the great outdoors this summer, and everything our great province has to offer. I know it is hard for many not to be able to travel outside the country, but what better place to be cooped up than Alberta?
While we continue to work towards attracting game-changing investment, such as Alaska to Alberta Railway, we also recognize that we need to invest in ourselves. Today I wanted to share with you an update on the money that the government is investing here in Alberta, and also out in our area.
Since being elected, your Alberta government has spent more than $44 million dollars in our area. This has gone into many different facets of our community. These range from arts and culture grants, work on roads, and especially work on our schools.
The list is long, but some of the highlights include:
- $185,000 for work on the Evansburg Courthouse
- $9,000 for work on the Alexis First Nation Courthouse
- Over $80,000 for our various Agricultural Societies (real backbones of our communities in rural areas)
- $59,000 for Evansburg Lodge
- $60,000 for Camp Health, Hope, and Happiness Society
- Over $37,000 for support the arts
- Over $12,000 to support the Royal Canadian Legions
- Over $27,000 for the Darwell Public Library
- Over $649,000 for Camp Warwa (a great facility that provides year-round camp opportunities and outdoor education for youth)
- Over $6.5 million for various improvements at several schools
- Over $24 million for a replacement school in Riviere Qui Barre’s Camilla School (to be completed Jan 2021)

Long Term Benefits
Much of this has been a part of an overall effort to create job opportunities as part of the largest infrastructure build in Alberta’s history. More than $10 billion being spent on various projects and improvements all across the province.
In all honesty, yes, we are borrowing money to accomplish much of this. I know that many of you are frustrated by this, and I share those frustrations. The level at which it is being done during this time is not what we had envisioned when we took office. Alberta has been hit hard from several different angles, and these tough times call for tough decisions. For the time being, those tough decisions mean spending money, particularly on infrastructure, to get people working and prepare Alberta for the future.
While I can assure you that we remain committed to balancing the budget, we are also committed to a strong Alberta economy. The projects that we are investing in, such as an overpass near Acheson, will help to encourage growth where it was not feasible before. Achieving budget balance has been only slightly delayed, and in the upcoming budgets we will begin focusing on that once again.
