Greetings on the occasion of EID: Shane Getson, MLA for Lac Ste. Anne-Parkland May 23 / May 24, 2020
MLA Shane Getson would like to extend his greetings to all Albertans who would celebrate EID on May 23 and May 24, 2020.
The celebration of EID begins with a new moon sighting, at the end of the month of Ramadan. In many Islamic countries EID is a holiday. India which is a secular country with 14.2 percent or 200 Million Muslims also celebrates EID as a national holiday.
EID means “celebration” and Mubarak means “blessed”. EID Mubarak is used as a greeting during this celebration.
The date of the Islamic festival Eid al-Fitr changes annually according to the lunar calendar. After Muslims have observed Ramadan for around a month, they celebrate breaking their fast on EID.
Fasting for the 30 days during Ramadan and a further six days during Shawwal fulfils the obligation of fasting for the entire year as per the Islamic beliefs. As per Islam it is believed that good deeds are rewarded ten times and the month of Ramadan culminating into EID is the best time to practice good deeds. According to traditional belief, the first verses of Quran – the holy book of the Islamic religion – were revealed by The Prophet Mohammad during the month of Ramadan that pinnacles and concludes with the sighting of the moon and beginning of the EID festival.
The customs and practices allow a devote Muslim to start celebrating EID even if the moon-sighting has not been personally witnessed, as long as they can receive a message for friends and relatives anywhere in the globe – that the moon has be sighted.
During Eid, Muslims often purchase new clothes for the occasion, and take part in festivals and celebrations. Many wake up early to pray at a mosque or at an outdoor prayer venue – designed for mass prayers. Gifts and cards are widely exchanged among friends and family.
However, this year due to the corona-virus pandemic celebrations will be slightly different. Most of the meetings with friends and family have been planned remotely and social distancing guidelines are being followed.
The Premier of Alberta Jason Kenney has signed 100s of EID greeting cards. There has been contribution to the EID stakeholder list from most of the Alberta constituencies. The constituency of Lac Ste Anne Parkland and its MLA Shane Getson with his team has made special efforts in contributing to the EID stakeholder list. This is the list of important community leaders and volunteers in the faith community of Islam.
