It is the innocent and law-abiding citizens who would be directly affected by the recent gun control enactments announced by the Federal Government.
As your MLA I promise I will continue to fight tooth and nail against the Federal government over this issue, from a legislative standpoint, freedom, and overreach, and as well as a responsible firearms owner standpoint!
The Government of Alberta is concerned about all crime, including the illegal use of firearms. However, we do not support targeting law-abiding Albertans, who have purchased their property legally, owned these items safely and committed no crimes.
Government of Alberta Motion
The Alberta Government has tabled a motion in the Legislature in response to the actions of the federal government. This motion asks the Legislature
- to recognize that the central problem that we face is the criminal use of illegal firearms by unlicensed individuals;
- to oppose laws that unfairly target law-abiding citizens and
- to support the government in asserting provincial jurisdiction by taking measures such as appointing our own Chief Firearms Officer (CFO) to replace the current Ottawa appointee.
In addition to considering the appointment of an Alberta CFO, the Government is examining other measures that can be taken to support law-abiding gun owners and tackle the criminal use of firearms.
Sturgeon River-Parkland MP, Dane Lloyd, co-hosted a virtual townhall with Gerald Soroka, MP for Yellowhead on June 4, 2020 at 6:30 PM (MST).
The townhall included a presentation on the Facts and Myths of the Liberal Firearms Ban followed by a time for Q&A. I was pleased to be invited, and to also take field questions from the concerned callers.
