Bill 201 Has Passed
On June. 26th, Bill 201 that would establish a Strategic Aviation Advisory Council, received royal assent in the Legislature. This Bill was a Private Members’ Public Bill that was brought forward by MLA Richard Gotfried of Calgary-Fish Creek. The Bill passed with unanimous consent and is designed to organize a panel of “Experts” who will ensure a well-developed, and strategic approach to air services, airports and related facilities, pilot training, aircraft maintenance, and innovations in aviation that will ensure competitiveness.
Aviation
As a pilot myself, I was so happy to see this Bill pass as I know that many local airports across the province require this kind of support to remain viable. By creating this strategic aviation advisory council innovations in aviation will flourish in the province by making advances in aviation developments related to agriculture, forestry, energy, medical and emergency services to continue Alberta’s legacy of leadership in the country and around the world.
This Bill allows for Alberta to continue making strides in diversifying our economy and attracting new investors who want to be a part of the Alberta Advantage.
Why Do I Support the Aviation Bill?
I rose in the Legislature and voiced my support for this Bill as our aviation industry in Alberta has been undersold for far too long. My Constituency of Lac. Ste Anne-Parkland has two airports: one in Mayerthorpe and an international airport in Villeneuve. While local airports do not have the glamor of larger airports like the ones in Edmonton and Calgary, they are important places of business and transportation for rural communities like mine who may not be able to access larger airports on a consistent basis.
As I said in the Legislature, Alberta has a fantastic opportunity to be the “Wichita North” of Canada. What I meant by that was Wichita, Kansas was the birthplace of Cessna, Boeing, and other companies like Garmin. Through the promotion of free-enterprise, a commitment to innovation, and a solid foundation of entrepreneurial spirit—Alberta can create an environment for similar companies to grow and become highly successful.
This Bill is the start of creating that reality for aviation businesses in this province, and I commend and applaud everything MLA Gotfried has done to ensure the passing of this Bill.
